This type of transponder is generally known as a "programmable" chip in that it needs to be programmed to the vehicle using diagnostic type scan tools or key programmers.
It is not user programmable and so can only be coded to the vehicle using special equipment and will generally need a manufacturer pin-code or security code for this process.
This type of chip is know as a carbon chip and they are very small and can easily be lost when a car key is opened up to change the remote battery.
Without this chip in the key head of the key, the car will not start as this chip contains security information that the car looks for every time the ignition it turned to start the car.
There are many versions of these carbon chips and all have different types of information in them. The vast majority will have a code printed on them to help identify them and most codes start with the letters PCF.
