ID48 - TKM EM4170 type 48 unlocked- transponder chip key head

This type of transponder is generally known as a "CLONING" chip in that it is used in conjuntion with a cloner or cloning machine to copy the data from another transponder chip and so the new key has all the same information as the original. The vehicle will then see both keys as the same as they both have the same ID.

This is OK for most instances but it is important to remember that if one of the 2 keys is later stolen, most locksmiths will delete the memory in the vehicle and then re-learn the key you still have. If the key you still have uses the same ID as the stolen key you are re-learning both and so the thief can return and steal the vehicle.

If you chose to get a cloned key you will need to tell the locksmith that the stolen key was a cloned copy and so he will need to write a new virgin chip with a different ID number to the car once he has deleted the memory.

It is not generally user programmable unless you have the correct cloning machine to read the original data and write it to this blank chip.

Without a transponder chip in the key head of the key, the car will not start as this chip contains security information that the car looks for every time the ignition it turned to start the car.

There are many types transponder chips and all have different types of information in them. The vast majority will have a code printed on them to help identify them.

This one here is known as a TKM or TKM extreme and is used to copy ID48 transponder chips used in vehicle made by VW, Audi, Skoda, Fiat, Volvo and some Honda models.

It is referred to as an extreme as it has a large antenna inside it makeing it ideal for vehciles that have weak reader coils where other cloning chips may fail to be read by the vehicle.

This TKM chip fits onto special key blades with a U frame. It locks in place using the tangs on the end of both sides as shown in the photos.
